Public Electricity Suppliers in England

Public electricity suppliers (PES) in England were comprised of 14 private corporations. In the early 90s, about 1/2 of those private companies in England and Wales were changed into independent regional. In 2000, as part of the restructuring and Utilities Act 2000, the general public electricity suppliers needed to own separate licenses. This gave rise to competition in the electricity trade in England and Wales. When the electricity industry was privatized, the government made structural changes to encourage competition amongst companies and provided consumers a cost savings.
